Introduction
Over the last two decades, breakthroughs in the research methodologies employed by experimental physiologists and clinical scientists have paved the way for an explosion in the quality and quantity of available data. These developments have underpinned many of the post-genomic era's advances in understanding, enabling the analysis of specific physiological systems through the collection of unique individual data sets. In parallel with these experimental developments, advances in computational and numerical techniques have accelerated our capacity to derive new knowledge; making possible the integration of multiple data sets through the application of bio-physically based computational models. These modelling developments now provide the potential for analysing complex cause and effect relationships and facilitating the development of improved mechanistic understanding in a range of physiological systems. Through the efforts of an active and multi-disciplinary research community the heart has emerged as arguably the most advanced current exemplar of this approach.
Building on the momentum generated from the previous Cardiac Physiome Workshops held in Oxford (2006), Auckland (2008), Cambridge (2009) the 4th Cardiac Physiome workshop was held in Oxford July 8th-10th 2011. The workshop was residential and all sessions and participants were accommodated at Merton College in the middle of Oxford, a unique venue for both the formal and informal parts of the program. The focus of the meeting continued our theme of combining both experimental and modelling research focused on understanding function across physiological scales in the heart.
Speakers
Covering this scope, plenary talks were given by:
Don Bers (University of California, Davis), an international research leader in the area of cellular and molecular factors involved in the control of cardiac muscle contraction, particularly as modulated by intracellular calcium.
Nicholas Ayache (INRIA, Asclepios), who leads a research group focused on biomedical image analysis and simulation across a number of cardiovascular applications. He is also the editor in Chief of Medical Image Analysis and has been a scientific consultant for several industrial companies in image processing, computer vision, and biomedical imaging.
Yoram Rudy (Washington University in St Louis), whose research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and how they lead to sudden death. He has pioneered theoretical approaches to study these phenomena at various levels of the cardiac system.
